The Pendennis W. Reed Collection includes the records of the Bishop Gutta Percha Company and its subsidiaries in New York, N.Y. and New Jersey. It also includes the papers of Emma J. Foster of Carmel, New York which consist of genealogical notes and papers concerning the history of Putnam County, New York and its churches. The inclusive dates of the entire collection are 1787-1978, with the majority of material from the late nineteenth century. The papers were acquired from Pendennis W. Reed, who was an officer of the Bishop industries and relative of Emma Foster.

The history of the Bishop Gutta Percha Company began in 1847 when S. Armstrong and Samuel Bishop first began importing gutta percha to the United States.
